Abuse advocate continues trek
Community: After a week of campaigning in the Grand Duchy, Scottish actor Matthew McVarish has headed to Brussels as part of his 10,000 mile walk to raise awareness about child sexual abuse.
A Scottish actor has left Luxembourg as part of his 16,000 kilometre odyssey to raise child sexual abuse awareness. Matthew McVarish, walking through 31 capitals across Europe, departed from the Gëlle Fra war memorial Thursday morning, after a week of high profile events and meetings with politicians, community groups, victims and advocates in the Grand Duchy.
The actor left London on May 31 for an 18 month trek called “Road to Change: Walk to Stop the Silence”. In each city, he is hosting a screening of the film “To Kill a Kelpie”. In Luxembourg, it was shown at Altrimenti on Monday evening.
Before the screening, McVarish met with Luxembourg justice minister Octavie Modert (photo). She praised him “for his remarkable and courageous initiative that raises visibility on a subject that is too often ignored”, the justice ministry said in a statement.
More than 100 million youths and adults across Europe have been victims of child sexual abuse, including McVarish, according to the ministry. As part of the meeting, Modert highlighted “recent legislative changes introduced in the fight against sexual abuse” in the Grand Duchy.
“Shine a valuable light into a very dark corner”
McVarish was accompanied by Alice Walpole, Britain’s ambassador to Luxembourg, as he set out towards the Belgian border.
“It was a pleasure to accompany Matthew McVarish on the first few miles of his onward journey yesterday morning,” Walpole told Delano on Friday.
“Child sexual abuse is a very disturbing issue and one that is only now starting to gain real visibility in the UK. The efforts of people like Matthew to get it into the public domain are important and praiseworthy–and Matthew’s decision to walk all round Europe to publicise child sexual abuse prevention and healing across the European Union will shine a valuable light into a very dark corner.”
“I know that he had a number of very useful meetings in Luxembourg–including offering some ideas to the ministries of justice and family. We will be following Matthew’s progress carefully over the coming months,” she said.
After Brussels, McVarish heads to Amsterdam, Berlin, around the Baltic, and then heading to southern Europe before concluding the tour in February 2015 in Edinburgh.
